There's no better time to open the city's first New Orleans snow-ball shop than during a heatwave. Tucked between two of the many small restaurants in Sherman Oaks' restaurant row is Nola Ice, a product of two entertainment publicists with Southern origins and aspirations to bring the Big Easy treat to the West Coast.

SHERMAN OAKS: It's hot. And it's realllllly hot in the Valley, and there's nothing better than a sno-cone when it's 110 degrees outside so this is excellent news: Nola Ice opens tomorrow, June 21, serving up New Orleans-style shaved ice cones in many many flavors. We could bathe in a pool filled with pina colada sno-cones right about now.

LA Times “The Guide” – 2008
With high-hopes of piggybacking on the frozen yogurt trend, Nola Ice brings to the L.A. area a Southern dessert classic that traces its taste origins back to old town New Orleans (hence the shop's name). Nola's flavored ice - formally dubbed "New Orleans snow balls" - come in a variety of flavors, from the classic fruits (banana, strawberry, peach) to bakery tastes (Apple pie, red velvet) to non-alcoholic versions of adult favs (mojito, pina colada, bahama mama).

On June 21, New Orleans native Erin Earls and friend Jillian DeFrehn (who worked together as Paramount publicists) opened Nola Ice, specializing in New Orleans style shaved ice. The pink and white shop occupies a former spa and is designed to look like a French Quarter café. Flavors of “the hottest ice in town” include black cherry, Mardi Gras King cake and Fuzzy Navel (non-alcoholic). They imported their shaved ice machine from the Big Easy.

I don't discriminate when it comes to cold treats. I also love ice pops, Italian ice, gelato, sorbet, ice cream sandwiches, and push-up bars… okay stop me now. There are many obvious places to go… But I want to point out to you some locations you might not know about. Nola Ice in Sherman Oaks Get back to basics with this New Orleans style sno-ball shop inspired by the very first frozen treat from Ancient Rome. The flavor selection will make your head spin. They even have bar flavors… like Mojito and White Russian.

Retro dessert roundup. Blame it on the red velvet cupcake. Blame it on the worst economic crisis since the Great Depression. But it looks like the ebb and flow of the retro dessert trend is at high tide… here’s a list of some other retro desserts… Nola Ice (Sherman Oaks): New Orleans Snoballs.
